Handloom 101: What Makes Each Weave Special

Handloom 101: What Makes Each Weave Special

Handloom fabric is woven on a loom worked by hand and foot. The small irregularities you can feel are not flaws — they are the signature of the person who made it.

Slub and texture

Hand-spun threads vary in thickness, which gives khadi and many handloom cottons their soft, slubby feel. It also means each piece is slightly different.

Extra-weft motifs

Small woven motifs that seem to float on the surface are added thread by thread while weaving. They take patience and time, which is why these sarees feel so special.

Caring for handloom

Wash gently in cold water, dry in the shade and iron while slightly damp. Treated well, handloom only gets softer.
